First Birthday Party a great success

The Radio Teesdale Birthday Bash at the Jersey Farm on Friday the 28th of March was a huge success. It was great to see so many children, members, supporters, performers, listeners and colleagues from the press all there and having a good time. Photographs of the night will be appearing on our gallery pages over the next week.

Throughout the evening presenter Mr Andy introduced the acts who freely gave up their time including, Eileen and Joe, Teesdale Folk, The Jazz Quartet, Dave Kidd, a local Dance Troupe and the up and coming Indie group, The Conspirators.

Helen Goodman, the local MP also kindly popped in and said some very kind words before cutting the beautiful birthday cake.

Of course, a great many people contributed to making such a fine evening and it’s difficult to list everyone. However, we should say a special thank you to Cat Chapman who coordinated the whole activity. Very well done everyone.

To coincide with the birthday we now a new range of merchandise – T Shirts, mugs and pens. Call into the office or catch us at one of the events we will be at over the coming months to buy one.

The next few weeks sees more exciting developments – Streaming on the Internet and a Listen Again facility, a redesigned web site and our new Spring Schedule starts on the 14th April. Watch this space for more details.

"Radio DJ broadcasts into the ether"

It’s been a very busy few days in the Radio Teesdale offices talking to the local and the national press.
Yesterday morning Andy forgot to switch the transmitter from the automated to the studio desk. A very easy thing to do at that time in the morning. Especially when you are preparing for a busy show. As I always do I tuned in at home as I get the kids ready for school. I noticed the overnight automated system was still on just after 8am so I rang the studio. No answer. I tried a couple of times and thought Andy must not made it into the studio for some reason. I rang again a little later and Andy answered and we both worked out what happened. It turned out he'd seen the phone ringing as he was dong a voice a link and even asked "the listeners" to ring back when a record was on! We took a deep breath and brought it back on air with explanations to the listeners. Andy then managed to cram a 90 minute show into 30 minutes with reruns of what happened in the first hour! Well recovered Andy.
At the end of the show, a good friend to Radio Teesdale, reporter Jim McTaggart of the Northern Echo came rushing in. He’d heard from a listener about what had happened. The Northern Echo has today done a page 2 story with a photo of me consoling Andy. They even had the Cluff cartoon featuring Radio Teesdale! - Sheep with a mobile phone asking what had happened to Radio Teesdale. Then the fun started........
Today, we’ve had several of the national papers and the Press Association on the phone and ITV came down and did an interview. It's already appeared on the Wigan Observer and Daily Telegraph web sites.
Most of the reporters asked if Andy got “into trouble” for the event. Far from it. Our philosophy is that we aim to be professional at all times. Everyone makes mistakes and we certainly operate a no blame culture within Radio Teesdale. Almost every one of our 35 presenters had never been in a radio studio before they joined Radio Teesdale. As we approach our first birthday, everyone has done fantastically well to pick up all the technical aspects of broadcasting. At the end of the day, the radio side of things is 10% of what we are about. It’s all about working with the community of Teesdale. We truly believe that Radio Teesdale belongs to the people of Teesdale – for the people of Teesdale and by the people of Teesdale. Andy and his colleagues do a fabulous job and Andy will most certainly back doing great work on the breakfast show on Monday. I don’t think he’ll forget the press the button though!
